Cory wins major contract to process Hertfordshire’s waste
Cory has today announced that it has been awarded a major contract by Hertfordshire County Council to manage the treatment of 100,000tpa of the county’s waste. The contract will run from April 2024 for ten years, with the option to extend for another five years.
Cory will process non-recyclable, residual waste created in Hertfordshire at its energy from waste (EfW) operations in Belvedere and convert it to baseload electricity and recycled materials for use in roading and construction. The waste will be transported to Belvedere by river via Cory’s waste transfer station in Barking. Cory’s use of the Thames removes around 100,000 vehicle journeys from London’s roads each year.
The contract award comes as Cory progresses its Riverside 2 development, which will include an EfW facility that will be adjacent to Cory’s existing EfW facility and will be one of the largest and most efficient in the UK.
Dougie Sutherland, Cory’s Chief Executive, said: “This is a significant contract for Cory, enabling us to process more waste from the wider South East region. We’re looking forward to working with Hertfordshire to help displace waste from landfill and inefficient EfW facilities to our site, which has a clear strategy to decarbonise society’s residual waste.”
Cllr Eric Buckmaster, Hertfordshire County Council Executive Member for the Environment, said: “We want to create a cleaner and greener environment in Hertfordshire, so being able to stop sending waste to landfill sites is really a significant step for us. Of course, we want to help our residents throw away less, and to reuse or recycle as much as possible, but we’re still left with around 250,000 tonnes a year that we need to dispose of, and these new contracts will help us do that in a more environmentally sustainable way.”
